Lascaux, the major prehistoric cave site in Montignac, Dordogne

What to Do in Sarlat When It Rains

The Périgord Noir can still be explored in wet weather. For a genuinely indoor day, choose Lascaux IV, the Gouffre de Proumeyssac, the National Museum of Prehistory at Les Eyzies, Sarlat’s covered Sainte-Marie market or the Rex cinema. Le Thot is a mixed visit, with indoor areas and an outdoor animal park, so check the forecast before including it in a rainy-day plan.

Caves and prehistoric sites, fully indoors

The Vézère valley has around a dozen genuinely indoor caves and chasms beyond the best-known ones: Grotte de Font-de-Gaume, Grotte des Combarelles, Grotte de Rouffignac, Grottes de Lacave, or the National Museum of Prehistory at Les Eyzies. Enough to fill a whole day of visits without getting back in the car in the rain.

Museums and workshops

Sarlat also has a few small indoor museums, such as the Bovetti Chocolate Museum or the Truffle Museum — good for an hour or two between downpours.

Back at the villa

Back at the villa, the games room and its pool table are the best way to wait out a downpour.
