A few choices work well with children: the Château de Castelnaud and its hands-on museum of medieval warfare; the Village du Bournat and the Aquarium du Périgord Noir at Le Bugue; and Le Thot, whose outdoor animal park complements Lascaux IV. For canoeing, many operators generally require children to be at least 5 years old and able to swim: always check the chosen operator’s conditions. A traditional gabare boat trip on the Dordogne is a gentler alternative to canoeing; check the operator’s timetable and conditions.
More parks worth exploring nearby
The area has several more parks and reserves, at varying distances from the villa depending on what you fancy: the Préhisto-Dino Parc at Lacave, the Calviac zoological reserve, or the Parc animalier des portes du Périgord at Beauregard-de-Terrasson. Plenty to vary the outings over a longer stay.
A break back at the villa
Younger children are just as happy dipping in and out of the villa’s pool and garden between outings — there is no need to pack everything into one day. It is also one of the reasons families travelling with us often prefer a longer stay to a tightly packed run of day trips: see our suggested programmes.
